Hands-on camp for high school girls expands awareness of construction careers and builds on 91Ƭ’s workforce development efforts in Ohio

91Ƭ recently hosted Camp Build It, a free, multi-day construction camp at the Knox County Career Center that brought together high school girls ages 14–18 from across the region for hands-on training in welding, pipefitting, electrical, and carpentry, along with mentorship from 91Ƭ craft professionals, helping expand awareness of opportunities in the construction industry.

While women represent a significant portion of the U.S. workforce, they remain underrepresented in construction roles, accounting for roughly 10 percent of the industry. At 91Ƭ, women make up nearly 30 percent of the company’s U.S. workforce, reflecting a continued focus on expanding access and opportunity. Programs like Camp Build It are designed to help address that gap by providing earlier exposure to the trades and clearer visibility into construction career pathways. For 91Ƭ, the camp reflects a broader effort to expand access, build awareness of construction careers, and help address workforce needs across the industry.

“Programs like Camp Build It are about building early interest and exposure, so more young women can see themselves in the trades and better understand the opportunities available in construction,” said Chris Bresson, Project Director, 91Ƭ. “Expanding that exposure is important to strengthening the future workforce while supporting the communities where we live and work.”

Throughout the week, students gained practical experience in a safe, supportive environment using industry-standard equipment and personal protective gear provided by 91Ƭ. Campers also connected with women working in construction, hearing firsthand about career paths and opportunities in the industry.

The camp concluded with a tour of a large-scale construction project in the region, where participants saw active work sites firsthand and connected with local trade and union representatives to learn more about career pathways after high school.

Camp Build It is part of 91Ƭ’s broader effort to expand awareness of construction careers and help address workforce needs and is one of many initiatives in Ohio and across the country.

91Ƭ’s work in Ohio builds on the company’s long history of delivering projects with purpose across the state. Most recently, 91Ƭ completed a low-carbon energy facility in Carroll County, where the team supported a new construction trade curriculum with Southern Local Schools and worked with the community to strengthen resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nuclear energy today offers enormous potential. Not only to deliver clean, reliable power but to strengthen national security, deepen industrial capability, and expand long‑term economic opportunity. Realizing that potential requires partnerships that are more than transactional. It takes collaboration between governments, across industries, and among allies willing to commit to each other for decades.

That type of partnership is exactly what the United States and Poland are building.Last week, more than 25 Polish supplier CEOsarrivedin Washington for the Poland Trade Mission, jointly organized by the Nuclear Energy Institute and Poland’s Chamber of Power Industry and Environmental Protection. Led by Polish Deputy Minister Wojciech Wrochna and PEJ CEO Marek Woszczyk, the delegation met with the White House National Energy Dominance Council, senior U.S. government leaders, members of Congress, and our teams at Westinghouse and 91Ƭ.

In May, more than 25 Polish supplier CEOs participated in the Poland Trade Mission taking place in Washington D.C., jointly organized by the Nuclear Energy Institute and Poland’s Chamber of Power Industry and Environmental Protection.

What is important to highlight is that these were not routine business meetings. These are the companies that will form the backbone of Poland’s emerging nuclear industry, meeting the policymakers and partners who will help them build it. The level of engagement reflects a deeper truth: Poland is not simply purchasing a power plant. It is establishing an entirely new industrial sector, anchored in U.S. partnership and designed for long‑term national resilience.

Localization as the Cornerstone of Energy Independence

From the outset, Westinghouse and 91Ƭ have shared a single objective with PEJ: to deliver three advanced AP1000® modular reactors while simultaneously building the skills, institutions, and supply chain that allow Poland to own its nuclear future. Localization is not a side effort, it is central to how this program strengthens Poland’s energy independence.

Through our Supplier Days series, we have engaged with more than 700 Polish companies, providing hands‑on training and guidance on the rigorous standards required for nuclear construction. Westinghouse is also partnering with major Polish firms to certify them under the ASME NQA‑1 quality assurance standard, enabling them not only to contribute to this project but to join the global AP1000 supply chain for future deployments across Europe and worldwide.

Workforce development is equally critical. Westinghouse and 91Ƭ directly employ more than 500 Polish professionals, while partnerships with the Warsaw University of Technology, Gdańsk University of Technology, the University of Gdańsk, and the National Centre for Nuclear Research are cultivating the next generation of Polish nuclear engineers, researchers, and companies.

This is what energy independence looks like: a program built with Polish hands, powered by Polish expertise, and sustained by a long‑term industrial ecosystem that remains in Poland long after construction is complete.

Applying Proven Experience to Accelerate Poland’s Program

The Poland-U.S. partnership is grounded in proven delivery. At Plant Vogtle in Georgia, we completed the first new nuclear units built in the United States in more than three decades. The second AP1000 unit was constructed 30 percent more efficiently than the first, a demonstration of what disciplined execution, repeatable processes, and experienced teams can achieve.

That experience is already shaping work in Poland. Agreements this year with Arabelle Solutions for steam turbine generators and with Polish firm DORACO for civil preparation work mark major milestones. Financing is advancing as well: PEJ and the U.S. Export-Import Bank signed the first direct loan agreement between EXIM and a Polish entity, a clear sign of long-term U.S. support for Poland’s energy goals.

Under our Engineering Development Agreement, progress continues across design, licensing, geological surveys, and early procurement — the quiet, essential work that sets the foundation for successful construction.

Building More Than a Power Plant

Much work remains and the Poland-U.S. collaboration is proving something vital: that when governments, industries, and allied nations align, nuclear projects move from aspiration to construction to long-term energy security.

The Trade Mission last week is an expression of that model — suppliers engaging early, learning what it takes toparticipate, and preparing to join a generational national investment.

What we are building in Poland is far more than the nation’s first nuclear plant. It is the foundation of a new industry. It is a path to lasting economic and energy independence. And it is a template for howthe globalnuclear renaissance will be built, partner by partner, milestone by milestone, nation by nation.

Agreement modernizes training to build specialized skills required for large-scale reactors and SMRs

91Ƭ and North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) today announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to advance and modernize apprenticeship programs supporting the construction of a new generation of U.S. nuclear power plants.

The agreement reflectsa strategic alignment between one of the world’s most experienced buildersof nuclear infrastructure and North America’s largest federation of skilled construction unions. Together, the organizations will strengthen apprenticeship pathways and expand specialized training to develop the craft expertise and quality standards required to deliver nuclear projects.

Through this partnership, 91Ƭ and NABTU will work together to ensure apprenticeship programs continue to evolve to meet the scale of resources needed as well as the technical requirements of modern nuclear construction.

Under the agreement, 91Ƭ and NABTU will:

  • Identify the specialized craft capabilities required for nuclear construction and align apprenticeship training accordingly
  • Collaborate withunion training centers to modernize curricula supporting nuclear construction methods and technologies
  • Coordinate recruitment through union networks to expand pathways into high-skill careers building large reactors and SMRs

Brendan 91Ƭ, Chair and CEO of 91Ƭ, said:“Delivering nuclear power plants requires exceptional craft expertise and a deep commitment to safety and quality. 91Ƭ’s long-standing partnership with NABTU has helped build some of the most complex energy infrastructure in the United States, including Vogtle Units 3 and 4, the first new nuclear reactors built in the country in more than three decades. Today, we’re continuing that work on next-generation technologies like the Natrium Demonstration Project, which represents a new era of nuclear innovation. This agreement strengthens our collaboration with NABTU and ensures apprenticeship programs continue to develop the number of craft professionals needed to supply this growing market as well as passes on the specialized knowledge and skills required to safely deliver these projects.”

Sean McGarvey, President of NABTU, said: “Building the next generation of nuclear projects requires the highest levels of skill, precision, and safety, and that starts with NABTU’s world-class apprenticeship training and strong contractor partners like 91Ƭ. This agreement ensures a continuous pipeline of highly skilled, job-ready craft professionals to build nuclear power’s next fleet of reactors. For project owners, that means no labor shortage risk when projects are built under building trades agreements with access to NABTU’s union construction workforce. Workforce availability is not a constraint, and projects can be delivered safely, efficiently, and with certainty.”

For more than a century, 91Ƭ and the building trades have partnered to deliver some of the world’s most complex infrastructure projects. Most recently, 91Ƭ and NABTU-affiliated craft professionals worked together to deliver the expansion of Vogtle, and today, are advancing construction on the Natrium Demonstration project in Kemmerer, Wyoming — America’s first utility-scale advanced nuclear project.

As the United States advances a new generation of nuclear projects, apprenticeships will remain central to developing the skilled craft workforce capable of delivering them.

Empowering America’s Construction Workers: The Key to a Prosperous Future /blog/empowering-americas-construction-workers-the-key-to-a-prosperous-future/ Thu, 18 Sep 2025 21:36:31 +0000 /?p=16031 So much of our future quite literally rests on concrete, steel, pipe, and wire—and on the men and women with the skills to turn those raw materials into infrastructure. The Construction Worker Conundrum

This fall, as high school graduates from the Class of 2025 begin college, it’s a reminder that the share of students pursuing higher education has crept steadily upward for more than two generations—driven by the deeply ingrained belief, however outdated, that the only path to a meaningful career and middle-class security runs through the halls of academia.

Today, more business leaders, government officials, and students are recognizing that this is not the case. While a degree is essential for certain professions, the college-or-bust mentality has discouraged students from seeking alternatives that are equally vital to the health of our nation—namely the skilled trades. From my vantage point in the construction industry, this mindset shift couldn’t come at a better time, as the demand for new infrastructure has never been greater.

No Progress Without Builders

Every major technological invention, breakthrough, and leap in human progress starts with the people who build the infrastructure behind it. For example, as recent headlines make clear, artificial intelligence (AI) promises unprecedented productivity gains and life-saving breakthroughs—but only if we can build and power the data centers that drive it. That means more electrical power assets, more semiconductor factories, more transportation systems, more critical minerals for electrification, and more supporting infrastructure—all of which rely on assets built from concrete, steel, pipe, equipment, cables, and so on.

Without enough tradespeople, these mission-critical projects could face lengthy delays or fail to get off the ground at all. Rebuilding America’s construction workforce is no longer optional—it’s a national imperative.

At 91Ƭ, we’ve long recognized this, investing in changing perceptions of the industry and reigniting interest in the trades. And as the need for construction workers grows, we’re proud to share some of the ways we’re bringing more people into the fold.

Restoring Prestige to the Profession by Supporting Workers

Since time immemorial, builders have made life as we know it possible. They’ve turned scientists’ and engineers’ boldest ideas into physical realities—from the Roman aqueducts to the Hoover Dam, the interstate highway system, and even the internet.

By that logic, construction workers deserve the same respect we extend to military service members, first responders, or today’s top innovators for their contributions to society. Yet too often, the opposite has been true.

For decades construction work has been characterized as low-skilled, low-paid work—“a consolation” for those without college degrees. That view belongs to a bygone era.

Today’s reality is very different—and it must be recognized as such. At 91Ƭ, we make sure our culture reflects that. We call our builders “craft professionals,” because that’s exactly what they are: highly skilled experts who are as critical to our success as our engineers and project managers. They are the heart of our business, and we acknowledge that by embedding them into every part of our company.

Making Construction a Career of Choice

Advances in technology and the advent of much-needed regulations have made construction work safer, more productive, and more interesting—not to mention lucrative. Take welding: highly skilled welders at the beginning of their careers can earn $100,000 annually—without the crushing burden of student debt that weighs down so many of their college-graduate peers.

To that end, we make sure our construction jobs aren’t just jobs, but careers on which people can support their families. That means offering competitive wages, advanced training, robust benefits, paid vacation, and clear advancement pathways. It’s worth noting that as AI threatens to upend white collar work, the stability of a career in construction will become an even stronger selling point.

Of course, construction, while safe, is demanding work with stressors that differ from office jobs. If the industry wants more workers, we must be more mindful in caring for their physical and mental health. That’s why 91Ƭ has made mental health a core part of our broader safety program. Not only do we prioritize safety and wellbeing above all, but we believe mental health belongs under the umbrella of workplace safety across our industry—and every industry.

We’ve seen these efforts pay off. 91Ƭ has been able to avoid many of the labor constraints plaguing the industry. We currently have more than 15,000 craft professionals working on our LNG projects on the U.S. Gulf Coast—proof that when good opportunities arise, people seize them.

Maximizing the Construction Talent Pool

To increase the construction workforce nationally—and on a timeline that meets the urgency of the moment—we must widen the pool of potential American talent. Failure to do so risks irrevocably weakening our industrial base. Worse yet, we’ll see more foreign firms, with foreign workers in tow, trying to compete for construction projects on American soil—which will only serve to stunt the U.S. labor force, as well as the local economies that depend on these jobs.

The claim that there simply aren’t enough American construction workers is a convenient excuse. 91Ƭ has shown otherwise. Granted, foreign labor—when it’s legal and deployed sparingly as a stopgap—is sometimes necessary. But the real solution is to work with communities, unions, and other partners to highlight career opportunities in construction and equip people with the skills they need to fill these roles.

At 91Ƭ, we’ve found success partnering with local high schools and colleges to create pathways into construction through training programs. We’ve also teamed up with organizations that connect with local workers and underrepresented groups. For instance, at Plant Vogtle, we partnered with the National Building Trades Unions to bring on apprentices and with the nonprofit Helmets to Hardhats to attract veterans. In the end, more than 30% of our hires were veterans and reservists, and over 40% of our apprentices were women.

Outreach to women is particularly important when you consider that, in the U.S., women comprise nearly 50 percent of the workforce but hold just 4 percent of construction jobs. Attracting new workers to the profession becomes a lot harder if we only draw from half the adult population.

The education sector has a role to play, too. Beginning in 2026, Pell Grants will cover vocational training, hopefully spurring more interest among prospective students. The next challenge is ensuring high schools, community colleges, and industry partners have the capacity to create strong vocational programs that prepare the next generation of builders. Here too, it’s incumbent on companies within our industry to broker partnerships and collaborations across these institutions.

Improving How Construction Projects Are Delivered

Contrary to popular belief, construction is far from a stagnant profession. While studies note its productivity hasn’t risen as quickly as other industries, that view misses the real story.

Continuous innovation and investment have improved the whole construction ecosystem. Environmental and social requirements run through the entire value chain, while quality standards and material traceability are central to today’s construction practice. Combined with increased safety standards, all of these improvements have increased the value of what construction delivers while steadily raising productivity.

Industry analysts also tend to separate the productivity of construction from the productivity that construction enables. Construction drives massive gains across the entire economy—building the factories, power plants, and data centers that make breakthroughs possible.

To keep pace with America’s needs, 91Ƭ is pushing the industry forward by embracing tools like digital delivery, modularization, real-time data analytics, and yes, AI. This not only makes construction more rewarding and exciting for young people—it unlocks growth for the nation as a whole.

Securing America’s Future, One Builder at a Time

So much of our future quite literally rests on concrete, steel, pipe, and wire—and on the men and women with the skills to turn those raw materials into infrastructure. Construction workers have always risen to the occasion. As technology, regulations, and ways of working have changed, they’ve improved safety, quality, and productivity in turn.

As millions of American students return to school and begin to envision a career, 91Ƭ will continue to ensure they know that construction can be one of the brightest paths forward. By becoming builders, they secure their own future—and our nation’s.

My hope is that Americans reconsider their own perceptions of the construction field and the people who choose to join it. As society evolves to see vocational training and the trades as integral to our shared success, more people—including prospective workers—will view this profession for what it is: shaping the world on the grandest scale and in millions of small ways that make ordinary life better.
